Factor Calculator

Index / MATH CALCULATORS

A factor calculator breaks a whole number into its prime factors and lists every factor it has, showing each division step along the way. Enter any whole number from 2 up and read the prime factorization, the full factor list, and the step-by-step working.

How to use it

  1. Enter a whole number (2 or greater).
  2. Read the prime factorization in the readout.
  3. Follow the numbered steps to see each division.
  4. Use the full factor list for fractions, LCM/GCF work, or homework checking.

How it works

The tool divides by 2, then by each odd number in turn, recording every successful division until nothing is left but a prime. That is the same trial-division method taught in school, just done instantly.

Worked example

Factor 200:
200 ÷ 2 = 100 → 100 ÷ 2 = 50 → 50 ÷ 2 = 25 → 25 ÷ 5 = 5 → 5 ÷ 5 = 1
Prime factorization: 2³ × 5²
All 12 factors: 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 20, 25, 40, 50, 100, 200

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a factor calculator and a factoring calculator?

A factor calculator works on whole numbers: it finds prime factors and lists all factors. A factoring calculator usually means factoring polynomials in algebra (for example x² + 5x + 6). This tool handles whole numbers.

What is prime factorization?

Writing a number as a product of prime numbers. Every whole number greater than 1 has exactly one prime factorization, which is why it is so useful.

How do I find all factors of a number?

Factor it into primes first, then combine the primes in every possible way. The tool does this automatically and lists them in order.

What if my number is prime?

The tool tells you so. A prime number’s only factors are 1 and itself.
