Timecard Calculator

Index / TIME & DATE CALCULATORS

A timecard calculator turns clock-in and clock-out times into hours worked. It subtracts unpaid lunch, handles overnight shifts that cross midnight, splits regular and overtime hours at the 8-hour mark, and estimates pay if you enter an hourly rate.

How to use it

  1. Enter your clock-in and clock-out times.
  2. Enter unpaid lunch in minutes (0 if you were paid through it).
  3. Optionally enter your hourly rate to see estimated pay, with overtime at time and a half.
  4. Read total hours, the regular/overtime split, and the pay estimate.

How the math works

Total minutes = clock-out minus clock-in (plus 24 hours if the shift crossed midnight), minus lunch. Hours beyond 8 count as overtime at 1.5× the rate. Overtime rules vary by state and country, so treat the pay figure as an estimate.

Worked example

Clock in 9:00, clock out 17:00, lunch 30 min:
8 hours minus 0.5 = 7.50 hours, all regular.

Overtime example: in 8:00, out 19:00, lunch 60 min at $25/hour:
11 hours minus 1 = 10 hours (8 regular + 2 overtime)
Pay = 8 × 25 + 2 × 37.50 = $275.00

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time and convert to hours, then subtract unpaid breaks. This tool does it including the overnight case.

Does it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the tool assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours automatically.

Is lunch deducted?

Only the minutes you enter as unpaid lunch. If your lunch is paid, enter 0.

Is the overtime calculation legally exact?

It follows the common 8-hour daily / time-and-a-half pattern, but overtime law varies by jurisdiction. Treat the pay figure as an estimate, not legal advice.
